Five Ways to Find Your Tribe with Social Media - Workology
Five Ways to Find Your Tribe with Social Media - Workology Five Ways to Find Your Tribe with Social Media There is something comforting about returning to a place where you felt like you belong. I recently had the opportunity to return to Denver/Boulder area. I spent most of my 20s in this area. This is where I found a great group of folks who let me be myself and I was able to truly belong. While I was in Denver, we had the chance to get together again and while it had been almost 15 years since I had seen them in person, we were able to talk about memories, our lives, life in general as if weâd been doing it all along (though as one friend pointed out, the last time we were all together we were either single or newly married no one had kids; now, well, life has continued on). I was in Denver for #DisruptHRDen and my talk topic was on finding your Tribe, where you belong. As I was working on my talk, I also read Braving the Wilderness by Brene Brown (based on the recommendation from the #HRBookClub, which Im super behind on, but its worth following for the reading recommendations). Belonging is an interesting concept. The ability to be yourself and find those who are like you, with whom you make a real, lasting connection is just phenomenal. It is freeing and grounding. But finding your community, your tribe can be difficult. One great way to find your tribe is social media. Most of the time, when we talk about HR and social media, we are either discussing recruitment or policies and procedures. I think its time we shifted the focus internal and lets talk about how to use social media to improve your career (and not just finding that new job). A strong professional network can help you get out of ruts, out of the way weve always done it, and find new and better ways of leading your HR department into the future (even if you arent in a leadership position). Your network will challenge you to try something new and step out of your comfort zone. You need to do this in order to move yourself, your department, your company and your profession forward. Creating a network is about creating a community and this is the same on social media. You need to put in the time and effort to find and develop this group. Five Ways to Find Your Tribe with Social Media First and foremost: Get on social media. Seriously. If you are reading this blog, you need to be on social media. Its not just people looking for a date or sharing what they had for lunch ( personally, I like the pictures of awesome food, dogs and babies). Get yourself on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook join the conversations! A few tips: On Twitter, follow people with HR in their bio. They are the ones with the passion for the industry and will help you get out of the same old same old. You will also find some great blog posts to follow there as well. Join a regular Twitter chat. And show up regularly so people get to know you and you get to know them. Find a chat that works with your schedule. I got started with #nextchat which lead to me finding other chats and getting to know a lot of great HR folks. Search for the hashtags and then follow the conversations. Jump in as you feel comfortable. The best chats are those that meet regularly and have a format to the conversation (set questions or topic); they may send it out ahead of time for those who like to prep. Add it to your calendar so you dont forget about it. Facebook can be great for finding local folks to connect with. Local SHRM or business groups will share information on their meetings. Be sure to connect/like those pages to stay in the know of whats happening at the local or state level. Attend their events get to know other local professionals. Im sure you are on LinkedIn. This is a great place to share knowledge via articles, blogs, podcasts and to keep them specific to your industry with hashtags and key words. Find other HR pros to connect with and dont just send the generic connect email. Take a few seconds to tell the person WHY you want to connect. Finally, be active. That doesnt mean you have to be on 24/7 or reply to everything, but you do need to do more than like or share something someone else has shared. Comment on why you are sharing something or what you thought of it. Create conversation. Reach out to people you want to know its okay to stalk them a little. Getting to know someone on social media makes it easier and more fun to meet someone in real life. So jump in, the waters great!

The 3 Least Intimidating Yet Effective Ways to Resurrect Your Stale Network - Melissa Llarena
The 3 Least Intimidating Yet Effective Ways to Resurrect Your Stale Network The 3 Least Intimidating Yet Effective Ways to Resurrect Your Stale Network Do either of the following scenarios sound familiar? You started out in education, but gradually moved into the marketing industry where youâve worked for the past 15 years. At this point in your career you want to return to education and have your eye on working for your alma mater. But the challenge is: though you still have friends and former colleagues back at the university, you feel awkward calling on any of them so many years later to help get you in the door for the new dean position you saw listed.OrTen years ago, you were a road warrior rock star consultant, logging miles and impressing clients. Your little guy just celebrated his 9th birthday, and youâre ready to get back in the game. But itâs been Gymboree, PTA meetings and soccer matches for the past decade. How will you get the inside word on the new division you just read about?Stale networks happen when people stay employed in one industry and havenât been in touch with contacts from their prior industry. They also happen when people step away from their industry for a while, and are looking for meaningful re-entry. Though it may seem so, their networks havenât vanished; they simply need to be carefully cultivated back to life. The three steps below detail how itâs done.STEP ONE: Re-engageIf youâre in the same boat as the marketer or parent returning to work, how do you start reaching out? Start by simply showing up on your former colleaguesâ social media feeds. LinkedIn is your most useful tool in this scenario. First, you want to update your LinkedIn profile (and, if you donât have one, shame on you, you need to create one). Click here for simple tips on building your LinkedIn profile. If some of your former colleagues are already in your LinkedIn network, provided you have your settings set to publish your profile edits, any updates made to your profile will show up in your networkâs newsfeed. You should then look up some of the specific people you want to contact and use the endorsements function to give them an endorsement. Again, at this point, you want to slowly get back into the game. These simple head nods are too easy not to use to your advantageA LinkedIn endorsement is a tool for contacts to recognize each otherâs skills. It pops up at the top of a contactâs profile page, and asks you to validate that âStellan knows Social Media,â âMarquez knows ITâ or âMaureen knows Nursing. â In this case, you want to recognize the skills of your target contacts, thereby putting you on their radar since LinkedIn sends a notice to endorsement recipients. So, with one click, youâre in their inbox, courtesy of LinkedIn.If you are new to LinkedIn and are just uploading a profile, adding former colleagues will also be a means of getting back in touch. You can do full name searches within the LinkedIn Directory, and send a quick note requesting the connection. It might also be useful to ask your first degree contacts to reach out to those second and third connects on your behalf.STEP TWO: Rebuild TrustNow that youâre back in touch, the next step is rebuilding trust. You wouldnât ask a favor of someone five minutes after meeting them. Similarly here, since itâs been a while since you last interacted as colleagues, the trust you once shared may have weakened a bit. So your next step is to show that youâre seeking to develop a mutually-beneficial connection and to figure out how to bring value before making a request. Value could be in the form of sharing a useful article, or offering to make an introduction of your own, but your focus should be on your contact and establishing his or her trust. Invite them out to coffee and see how you can help each other. For tips on networking with purpose, click here.â¦last but not least,STEP THREE: Create a Brand AmbassadorBy this point, youâve re-e ngaged with your network and have begun to rebuild trust with your contacts. As your newly-cultivated network strengthens, you can turn them into your brand ambassadors. A brand ambassador is someone you can count on to put your resume at the top of the resume stack on a decision-makerâs desk. This is a key factor to getting a leg up in the job search since a large portion of job openings are not posted. However, in order for your ambassador to be most helpful to you they have to be well-equipped by you. And how do I equip them, you ask? Simple: By making it easy to share your details with decision-makers. You write up a quick introductory bio, prepare an updated resume and send it all to your ambassador in an email. Then when your ambassador mentions you to the Senior Vice President of your dream hedge fund, and is told, âsend me your friendâs resume,â it only takes a click of a button to put you at the top of the stack. (For tips on how to be the cand idate they think of, click here)So thatâs your toolkit for freshening up a stale network:Re-engage: Use networking tools to get back in touchRebuild Trust: Share helpful information to rebuild trustCreate a Brand Ambassador: Cultivate a connection that can benefit your searchWant your old friends to join your job search S.W.A.T. team? The Perfect Length of a Standout Resume - Affordable Professional Resume Writing Services
The Perfect Length of a Standout Resume How long should a resume technically be? Is one page enough? Are two pages overkill? These are questions that we hear on a consistent basis, and the answers are not as cut and dry as you might think. Regardless of what is said in the many articles that you might read in your sporadic Google searches, the art of writing a strong professional resume is a unique process rather than a rigid template. It takes knowing the job candidate and the potential job description in order to produce the perfect document. The key word is customization. The resume that you had two years ago, or even two months ago, is not the same piece that you might write up today. Your career experiences and relevant trainings and certifications have led you to your current position and have set the stage for what potential opportunities stand before you. There is a certain finesse to using structured words and formatting to represent your aptitude without providing too many details. There are certain pieces of your work history that are pertinent to your current job search and other pieces that can easily be left off. It is up to the judgment of the resume writer to determine which elements should or should not make the cut. So, if you are struggling to determine the proper length of your resume, then we would advise you to chase after that happy medium. You want to give a concise vision of your previous career experience without any gaping holes, yet there is no need to provide detailed information about your work in a field that is fully unrelated to the dream job you are now pursuing. When it comes to sharing your academic background or listing out your various technical skills or professional affiliations, there is a point where enough is enough and where too little or too much information can dissuade the hiring manager to read any further. You have to engage without boring, to ignite curiosity and whet the appetite for learning more about your story. If you can pack everything in one page without undercutting yourself, then you may be golden. If you are struggling to reduce your words and minimalize your career history down to three or four pages of text, then it will take the full two pages to complete your resume project. Anything more than two pages is too daunting for the reader and will likely be quickly cast aside. At Platinum Resumes, we have the knack for determining what the right length is for you. There are many times when two sentences can easily be reduced to just a few power words. There are also times when you are diminishing an angle of great importance or trying to highlight certain skills that really arenât that applicable to where you are now headed with your interests and passions. Give us a call today to learn more about our resume writing process and how we can work our magic in creating that standout resume that is perfectly tailored for you!

Why Sales Marketing Matter to Recruiters
Why Sales Marketing Matter to Recruiters Hiring âcapable, self-motivatedâ employees is usually a top priority for growing companies, yet general recruitment practices have evolved little in the age of the social internet. This is the first instalment of a 3 part series that will examine the major trends that are shaping the future of successful hiring practice. Sales and marketing departments are constantly evolving, using the webâs potential to better engage and gather data on customers, and the results to boost conversion. Thereâs a greater focus on branding, constant engagement and communication as opposed to a quick sell, and these tactics are working their way into the recruitment sphere. At its core recruitment is sales, but perhaps harder! Recruiters have to sell twice; once to sell the candidate to the hiring manager and again to sell the company and position to the candidate. HR departments are under increasing pressure to engage the, oft-discussed, passive candidate, with an influx of marketing principles helping examine and improve how potential applicants perceive their brand. Control of the process is shifting, with top candidates no longer simply lining up, eager to hear if employers have decided to deign interest on them the battle for talent is now such that companies are focusing on the quality, and even the enjoyability, of the candidate experience. Recruiters have noticed, and even compete for the increasingly coveted âCandidate Experience Awardsâ. Treating candidates as customers: Companies are beginning to look at recruitment as more relationship building and are approaching candidates as they would customers. Here, content is king good careers sites have become crucial to hiring success accounting for 30% of hires in 2012. More company hires originate from direct applications to company websites than through job boards and yet a very small fraction of resources is dedicated to driving this inbound traffic through effective careers pages (spending on brand and website average at 2% of HR budgets and 1/10th of spending on job-boards or referrals). Crucial to the process is engagement, motivating candidates to commit. Not only is career page content important here, but the myriad guises of the application process is ready for disruption. Gamification is becoming popular here. While it might seem unconventional, research shows that gamification can lead to a 100% to 150% pickup in engagement metrics including unique views, page views, community activities, and time on site. Gamification is, in essence, a great tool to measure and reward progress, helping generate a unique candidate experience and improving retention, according to the 2010 Harvard Business Review. Success is by no means guaranteed. Marriotâs âMy Marriot Hotelâ Facebook game, designed to recruit employees for the companyâs management program, generated little buzz. It can be an effective filtering tool though. Easyjet had 27,000 participants to their realistic work simulation. Only 7,000 applied, but they found that the candidate suitability was up 40%. The game offers genuine insights into roles at the airline and this transparency clearly helped to attract the ârightâ candidates. New ways to communicate: Rules are developing to govern the way that companies treat their candidates. Interestingly, the 2013 Candidate Experience Report found that candidates are positively predisposed towards the company they apply to, but that this affinity includes specific expectations about how they will be treated. Applicants expect regular communication and feedback, reasonable assessments and overall good user experience. Successful recruiters are thinking more and more like marketers here. Creating a 2-way dialogue is the basis of forming a strong candidate relationship. âSocial recruitingâ may be one of the most popular buzzwords in recruitment, but social networks are a cost-effective way to marketing a brand and engage with passive candidates, particularly young candidates, many of whom arenât regular users of job boards and LinkedIn. Why is social media so important? It may only account for 3% of hires but it lets companies extend the range of possible interactions with applicants, it gives candidates a voice in the proceedings and gives employers a chance guide those interested back to their careers page. Early engagement with candidates also lets companies create an effective hiring pipeline, allowing them to monitor candidates from the pre-application phase onwards and manage the communication process. Social recruiting is here to stay and is especially important when it comes to hiring from the millennial generation something we will explore in more detail later in the series. Yet it is just one part of the new paradigm facing recruiters the need to engage and interact with the best talent, before, during and after the application.
